Keeping a Sense of Control Through COVID-19

For most of us, this has been an incredibly testing couple of weeks. It seems the world has been turned upside down and we’re still trying to figure out how to find our way around.

We hope you’ve been finding your way through, over or around the various obstacles that have been thrown at you, and that you are managing to bounce back when things are difficult.

It’s important to acknowledge that this is a difficult situation and sometimes things will get on top of us. So much is out of our control at the moment, so it’s no surprise if we feel like we’re on a roller-coaster of emotion.

We’ve certainly had our own struggles over the past week, and that’s surely going to continue, but we are hopeful that we can get through it and emerge stronger.

One key to achieving that is being conscious of the things that we still have some control or influence over.  There will always be things we can’t control but, equally, there will always be things we can.  Reminding ourselves to focus on ‘controlling the controllables’ can be a helpful element of our efforts to maintain motivation and wellbeing.

Like many of you, our own sense of control has been tested over the last couple of weeks as we’ve come to terms with the challenges of simultaneously home schooling and running a business, all while seeing a dramatic drop in product sales and the postponement of all consultancy work.

Luckily, we had the perfect opportunity to regain some control last week. Rather than simply cancel the Strengths Masterclass we were due to run in Bristol last Friday, we could try running it online. Yes, it was a little scary, but it gave us a clear sense of focus for the week and turned out to be the clear highlight of our week! You can read about our experience of taking a workshop online here.

We’d love to hear how you’re maintaining a sense of control in your own life right now – especially if you have any funny examples, like the photo below!
